When Opportunity Came Knocking

Nikolas Frangoulis, 26 started his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering in 2015 then went on to complete his Masters, focusing on the development of Mg-S batteries. He is now embarking upon his PHD. After hearing about Bramble Energy from several of his professors throughout his time studying, he came across the Bramble Management Team whilst interning in the labs at UCL.
He has been working for Bramble Energy since 2019. Here’s what he has to say about his journey so far….
Ever since I was young, I was always fascinated by new innovative technologies that would make the world a better place, minimising ecological disasters whilst making life easier. After finishing my MEng Degree in Chemical Engineering at UCL, I was interested in what opportunities might be available to me in the renewable energy sector and more specifically in hydrogen technologies.
The day an email popped into my inbox from Bramble Energy suggesting that I apply for an internship was just the opportunity I had been looking for – the chance to learn new things and immerse myself in a company that actually has the ability to help reach #NetZero goals. I was invited to interview and met with Vidal, COO at Bramble Energy where we discussed all things PCB fuel cells and they offered me the role. It has now been a year since I started working at Bramble and well what can I say? These guys are good, this company is going places and I am excited to be a part of it!
One of the best things about Bramble is the environment they have created at the company – I have absolutely no qualms in asking for help & guidance for whatever it might be – when it comes to technical support Erik, Head of Engineering and Tom, our CEO are always on hand and with the pressure that comes along with starting a PHD, Vidal and the rest of the team keep me motivated to carry on with the work that I love whilst encouraging me to maintain a good work/life balance!
As of two weeks ago, I officially started my PHD (albeit virtually due to Coronavirus) which is focused on hydrogen fuel cell diagnostics as well optimising the manufacturing process and conditions of the MEA’s aiming to develop better and more efficient systems. Working at Bramble is providing with me with unrivalled knowledge and access to some of the best facilities, which since they received significant funding in July, I have been helping to build at our new base in Crawley. Being able to see where we have come from in just a few short weeks, with the lab now functional, has been an incredible journey.
I am in no doubt that I have managed to find myself in the right place at the right time to complete my PHD successfully as well as helping to create something that is going to make a real difference in the world.
Nik Frangoulis
Well the feeling is mutual Nik!
“Nik has been a fantastic addition to the Bramble Energy team. He has come into a fast-paced environment and hit the ground running. He has truly owned the section of fuel cell manufacturing he has been made responsible for and achieved industry leading results. In fact, Nik’s practices have now become the standard of fuel cell material assembly at Bramble, something both he and we are very proud of! Nik may have been an intern at the start of this process, but he has certainly become an invaluable member of the Bramble Energy team over the last few months.”
